Title: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Description: No topic. Now there is.

I just thought I'd start a topic about this. I really liked the anime, and am considering buying it so my mom and brother can see it, as soon as I get some extra money.

The main reason I decided to start this topic is that I've been reading the light novels that the anime was based on. I really really really love these things. I just finished the fourth one, The Disappearance/Vanishment of Haruhi Suzumiya (depending on the translation. Vanishment looks to be more official, but Disappearance sounds so much better), and so far it's my favorite one.

My main question is if anyone else has ever read these books.

...what are these light novels you speak of and where can i get them

For realls, Haruhi Suzumiya was DEF one of my favorite series. I can't wait to buy the actual disks. I'm waiting for a complete box set, though.

but yeah, what are light novels, again? <<

Here's info on light novels.

Also, I suppose there's no problem with posting a link to the translations, since as far as I know there aren't any plans currently to bring the light novels here to America.

Have fun. The first book covers the first few episodes (chronological, not broadcast order), although you get a lot more out of it. Also, the second book is all about the filming of the movie that is shown in the first episode (broadcast order this time). It really makes some things clearer. Also, some of the books are collections of short stories that were first published in some magazine. A few of these were used for some other episodes of the anime, like the one on the island. Major difference in that storyline is that Kyon's sister does not go with them to the island (although she may not have gone in the anime either, but I seem to remember she did).

I don't recommend that you skip any part of them, even if there is something familiar about it. You'll miss something new and fun.
